Thank you for this Jo-Ann, I’m starting to rely on your posts for clarity in the din. ❤️
I’m gutted. But what is doubling me over is that WOMEN could have voted Kamala in and we DIDN’T. We didn’t. We allowed this to happen-many colluded to make it happen. I’m casting about trying to comprehend. What my mind comes up with: Is it as simple as many women feeling safer being misogynistic thus power-ajacent to men rather than stepping into our own power and the complexity and responsibility that comes with that? (And, to be fair, often danger.) Of course there’s the religious contingent-I come from an evangelical family and get that deal-but I’m referring to the non extremely religious.
I’d so appreciate your thoughts on the lack of a woman wave toward Kamala.
Those sound like solid guesses as to what’s going on. And I’d add a serious case of internalized misogyny. It’s so hard to relate to what seems so clearly to us to be voting against their own interests. I considered writing about it today but i just didn’t have it in me. It’s so disappointing. I’m so glad my posts are resonating. Thank you so much for your support and kind words 💙
Yes, misogyny. As you've said before many people, especially men, just wouldn't prioritize this issue. When I was able to look more closely at the results it was a turnout failure. Trump got apprimately the same amount of votes he got last time. Harris fell well below Biden's count. It was a turnout election and a lot of regular Dem voters just didn't show up. That makes it feel more like misogyny vs. economic insecurity and immigration. The threat to women wasn't enough to move them and/or they just didn't want to vote for Harris..
Oh man, that's interesting. And depressing. The Dems need to do better. So many voters just don't believe in them anymore (though I guess ingrained misogyny is a lot to push past).
It is a lot to push past. In a couple of days I will post a powerful piece by Tom Nichols, online today. You can find it in The Atlantic. He suggest, and I agree, people will have to suffer for the next two years before they can realize, Oh, man, we did get fooled again!
The Democrats have told men to sit down and shut up for the last 30 years. Reproductive rights? Only for women. Military draft registration? Only men have to do that. Feminists made sure there was funding for women's health, while men's health was ignored. American men got tired of misandry, and voted against it.
This loss was full-on brutal...still trying to process. I just feel so sorry for women and marginalised groups for having to see the country do this to them!
Also 100 percent in agreement on the culpability of the middle and upper class. At best, they are fellow travellers with fascism.
I feel like it's hard to say for me to say anything that doesn't sound like a platitude. But just want everyone to know that all the people of goodwill in Australia stand with you. The vast, vast majority of people here are dismayed. The bastards might have won a battle but they won't win the war!
Yeah, it’s so complicated. That generation of boys isn’t doing well for so many reasons and then it gets even more confusing when the message is they’re so privileged.
Thank you for sharing your truth at a time all generations of women can benefit. Your book will continue to be a resource for all. I would like to see you address the gender divide in this election season as well.
The only time I've cried so far is when I had to tell our kids who won yesterday morning over breakfast, and our six yro girl said "no fair, we haven't had a girl president yet." It broke me.
Thanks for the post, I can not stop feeling abandoned by society as a woman. I am dealing with that feeling and also thinking how I can start changing things around me (mostly my daughter). In my mind the words by Jane Goodall about acting locally to change the world resonate with me :).
I totally agree. It's easier to make change at the local level and also it affects our day-to-day more so it can be really mobilizing. You're not alone in feeling abandoned. I don't know if you read my last post about even progressive men don't get it and the despair women feel. I made a TikTok along those lines and it went viral. I'm fairly new on TikTok with few followers so clearly lots of women are feeling similarly. Hang in there!
Here’s the thing. They don’t all know it. my daughter is a freshman in high school, and she’s been talking for weeks about how other girls and minorities there were still picking Trump. As a lifelong feminist, I I can’t even begin to understand what the thought process is on this. I want some sort of explanation about how we got here, and the part that is so puzzling to me is that he had to have had a lot of support from women.
Yeah, I want to dig into that more, I just didn't have it in me today. It's so disappointing. And I should have been clearer, the girls who support Harris know, at least on some level, it's misogyny. Not the tRump supporters. :(
In terms of the lack of female support, racism must have left plenty of white women cold to Kamala. 😭
As a white educator in an overwhelmingly Latino population Spanish immersion elementary school, raising my half-Palestinian daughter close to the Arab side of the family, I’ve also witnessed brown on browner racist comments and micro aggressions.
Could it be that some brown women also couldn’t get over Kamala’s black part?
I wonder how much women’s racism dovetailed with internalized misogyny to keep a Harris presidency out of reach?
(I’m not trying to blame this fiasco on solely women, lord no; I just never believed the men would step up and am trying to understand why not enough women did.)
Sadly, it looks like white women didn’t step up if the breakdown by sex that i saw is accurate. Only 39% voted for Harris. They say they’re voting for a democracy but it looks like they’re voting for an ethnocracy. Black women (92%), Black men (78) and Latinx (61) women voted for Kamala. Interesting that Latina men and women were so split.
Oh. Oh wow. That speaks volumes as regards white women. I was shocked when in 2016 53% of white women voted for Trump, and that was with a white opponent. I had thought we were better than that. Now my remaining shreds of illusions about our racism drift away.
My intel on the Latino/x/e community is that many of those who can vote are now up to three generations away from 1st generation immigration status and aren't much moved by this anymore. They’re increasingly voting a more conservative ticket, especially the men. Word is that the Catholic church’s misogynistic roots run deep and far...

If you get prostate cancer, you will learn that feminists in Congress made sure there was far more funding for breast cancer than prostate cancer.
Thank you for this article and the shout-out:)

Thank you for this Boris. It's very sad but good to be reminded there are good people out there!!
Absolutely welcome 🤗 Even though I can't do much from here but hopefully I can provide some encouragement :)
I worry that my generation (gen x) didn’t raise healthy self confident men. What was once sarcasm has morphed into nihilism and apathy.

I meant the white female vote divide
ohhh got it!
The only time I've cried so far is when I had to tell our kids who won yesterday morning over breakfast, and our six yro girl said "no fair, we haven't had a girl president yet." It broke me.
I feel you. My daughter was 8 when I had to tell her Hillary didn’t win. Even sadder is that this time she wasn’t surprised :(

Amen
Thank you for this today, Jo. It helps me, a lot. Sending love.
I'm glad. Big virtual hug friend.

If I was firing on all cylinders today, I would’ve gotten that too 😢. I think we’re all in a state of disbelief and mourning.
